About Common Knowledge: There are some skills that used to be taught and passed down through the generations - how to tie secure knots, how to bake a loaf of bread, how to sew a button properly. Self-sufficiency was valued; now, with all of the information available to us online at any moment, we no longer have to bother to learn these things - we simply look them up, building a reliance on our technology. In order to encourage people to take these little skills on and value them again, I want to build a database of small, practical things - things that should be common knowledge again. You can contribute in two ways - one, by submitting, in clear detailed steps, some small thing that you know how to do - tie a tie, for example? The other is to simply post something you'd like to know and see as part of the common knowledge project - and I'll do the research! This is a lead-up to a grad project for fourth year - I have some ideas about the possible forms this will take in the end, but will let the information i collect over the next year dictate it. |
